Chilean public administration audit irregularities
Overview
Audits by Chile’s Contraloría General de la República (CGR) have uncovered significant fiscal irregularities and administrative mismanagement within the public sector.
In August 2026, an audit of the Urban Integration Program for Camps revealed irregularities involving rent subsidies exceeding $239 million. The investigation, covering early 2025 through March 2026, found that 168 subsidies were paid to deceased individuals and identified violations regarding beneficiaries holding contracts with spouses. Delays in contract regularization by the Subsecretaría de Vivienda resulted in an estimated fiscal loss of over $110 million. The CGR has ordered the regularization of funds with the Inter-American Development Bank and initiated disciplinary procedures.
In September 2026, the CGR identified further mismanagement regarding personnel, noting that 485 public officials in the central administration continued to receive full salaries while under preventive suspension during administrative investigations between 2020 and early 2026. Some officials remained suspended for over four years, with the ten most prolonged cases costing the State approximately $671 million in remunerations. In response, the CGR has taken direct control of the 30 most delayed cases to ensure resolution.
