Chilean Defense Minister clarifies stance on Falkland Islands sovereignty and trade

Chilean Defense Minister Fernando Barros has sparked tension with Argentina regarding the sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands (Malvinas). While reaffirming Chile's support for Argentina's sovereignty claims, Barros emphasized that any eventual solution must adhere to international law and respect the will and interests of the current inhabitants.

Barros noted that the United Kingdom has exercised sovereignty over the archipelago for 200 years, distinguishing between supporting a friend's claim and acknowledging the current factual situation. He stated, “One thing is to support a claim against the position of a friendly country, but according to international law, respecting the will and interest of the people involved and through peaceful means.”

Additionally, the Minister defended the right of the Magallanes region and Chilean businesses to engage in commercial and maritime activities with the islands. He expressed that there are no legal inconveniences to developing such trade routes, a move supported by local authorities in Punta Arenas to boost the regional economy. This stance contrasts with recent regional trends, such as Mercosur declarations that reiterate support for Argentina's rights in the dispute.
