Chilean Foreign Minister visits Port of Shanghai

Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna visited the Port of Shanghai, the world’s largest container terminal and the primary entry point for Chilean exports to China. Accompanied by Ambassador Alfonso Silva, the minister toured the maritime transport hub, which handles over 55 million TEUs annually.

The port facilitates approximately half of Chile’s shipments to China, including key products such as copper, cherries, cellulose, and salmon. China remains Chile’s largest trading partner, accounting for more than one-third of the country’s total global trade. Bilateral trade has grown nearly 15% over the last year, reaching US$67.1 billion.

Pérez Mackenna noted that the visit reaffirms the deep commercial ties between the two nations, highlighting the sustained growth of goods exchange since the Free Trade Agreement took effect 20 years ago. The visit concluded a five-day trip to China focused on high-level political and commercial meetings to strengthen the long-term alliance.
