Chilean hospitals implement emotional and technological support initiatives
Hospitals in Chile are introducing new programs to improve the well-being of patients through emotional support and immersive technology.
In Valdivia, the Hospital Base Valdivia launched the “A la quimio con mi simio” project. Created by Sophie Träger, the initiative provides emotional support kits containing plush monkeys to children and adolescents undergoing cancer treatment. These kits are designed to help pediatric patients express emotions and reduce fear during chemotherapy and other medical procedures. The program has also expanded to include kits for the siblings of patients to address the impact of the diagnosis on the entire family.
In Coquimbo, the Hospital San Pablo is piloting a virtual reality initiative to assist long-term patients. In collaboration with the Municipality of Coquimbo and the Universidad Católica del Norte, the program uses VR headsets to provide immersive 3D experiences, such as virtual tours of cities. The project aims to use technology to offer distraction and mental relief for patients facing prolonged hospital stays and routine-heavy environments.
