Chilean hospital patient support initiatives
Overview
Hospitals in Chile have introduced various programs aimed at improving the emotional and mental well-being of patients.
In the Talca region, the Hospital Regional de Talca implemented the ‘A la quimio con mi simio’ project. This initiative provides educational and emotional support kits, featuring plush monkeys and books, to children undergoing cancer treatment and their siblings to help them navigate the chemotherapy process.
Similar emotional support efforts were reported in Valdivia through the Hospital Base Valdivia, which also utilized the ‘A la quimio con mi simio’ project to help pediatric patients express emotions and reduce fear. Additionally, the Hospital San Pablo in Coquimbo has begun piloting a virtual reality program. In collaboration with local municipal and university partners, this project uses VR headsets to provide immersive 3D experiences, such as virtual city tours, to offer distraction and mental relief for patients facing long-term hospital stays.
