Chilean housing authorities push for urban planning and infrastructure updates
In the Los Ríos region, the Ministry of Housing and Urbanism (MINVU) has called on municipalities to accelerate the updating of their Communal Regulatory Plans. Seremi Cristian Arriagada Patiño emphasized that modernizing these instruments is essential for orderly urban growth, facilitating new housing developments, and improving quality of life. Currently, one commune in the region lacks a plan, two are updated, and six are in progress, with some areas facing delays of several decades.
In the Los Lagos region, MINVU and the company Suralis have signed a public-private agreement to expedite housing projects. The partnership aims to identify investment priorities and shorten execution times, specifically addressing challenges related to potable water and sewage feasibility, as well as rainwater management. Seremi Mario Marchant noted that the collaboration involves monthly meetings to resolve technical hurdles and accelerate the delivery of housing solutions to families.
