Chilean intelligence warns of 'critical event' over new Falkland Islands shipping route

Chilean intelligence services have issued a warning regarding a potential 'critical event' involving a new commercial shipping route from Magallanes to the Falkland Islands. The route, set to be inaugurated in November, is intended to establish a commercial link between Punta Arenas and Port Stanley.

The vessel involved is the Danstar, a 72-meter ship owned by the Chilean firm Easter Island Naviera. To avoid appearing to renounce Chilean sovereignty, the company has opted to navigate through the Strait of Magellan rather than the Drake Passage. This decision has raised concerns within Chilean intelligence about possible incidents involving Argentine Armed Forces.

To prevent unnecessary tension with Argentina, the commercial vessel will not be accompanied by a Chilean military escort. The initiative aims to position Magallanes as a primary supplier for the islands, potentially generating 20 million dollars in annual benefits and reducing delivery times compared to current routes from Uruguay.
