Chilean lawmakers demand better weaponry for Carabineros

Chilean lawmakers are calling for increased support and better equipment for the Carabineros following recent violence and the death of officer Cristopher Aguilera.

Deputy Francisco Orrego of the Renovación Nacional party has proposed equipping officers with UZI submachine guns. Orrego argued that there is a significant armament imbalance between police and organized crime groups, noting that while criminals may use automatic weapons, officers often carry semi-automatic pistols with limited capacity. The Carabineros institution declined to comment on specific weaponry, citing strategic security matters.

Separately, Deputy Javier Olivares of the Partido de la Gente criticized the government's public security management following the killing of Corporal Aguilera by a Venezuelan national. Olivares highlighted the loss of four officers in recent months and questioned the judicial system's handling of suspects previously detained by police. He also criticized the lack of executive presence at the officer's funeral.
