Chilean pension funds face massive losses from interest rate derivatives
Chilean pension fund administrators (AFPs) are facing significant valuation losses due to interest rate derivative investments. Reports indicate that these operations, which bet on declining U.S. interest rates, have resulted in losses of approximately US$7,700 million. Some industry analyses suggest total valuation losses across the sector could reach US$11,600 million.
The most conservative fund, Fondo E, has been particularly affected, recording a real decline of about 10.4% between January and September. These losses are largely attributed to swaps and other derivatives that lost value as U.S. Treasury yields rose instead of falling.
In response, Chilean lawmakers, including members of the Socialist Party, have formally requested that the Superintendencia de Pensiones investigate the AFPs' investment strategies and determine if there was negligence. The Superintendencia has expressed concern and is implementing new regulatory restrictions on these types of risky operations, which are expected to be fully enforced by November.
