Chilean AFPs face investigation after $7.7 billion pension fund losses
Chile's pension administrators (AFPs) are facing administrative and criminal scrutiny following significant losses in the conservative Fund E. Between January and September 2026, Fund E experienced a real decline of more than 10% after adjusting for inflation. Total losses across the pension funds are estimated at approximately $7.7 billion.
The Superintendencia de Pensiones has initiated sanctioning procedures against all seven operating AFPs—Capital, Provida, Habitat, Cuprum, Planvital, Uno, and Modelo—to determine if administrators breached their duties of loyalty and diligence. Additionally, Chilean lawmakers have filed criminal complaints with the Public Ministry, alleging potentially unlawful administration.
The losses are attributed to high exposure to financial derivatives, specifically interest rate swaps tied to US Treasury yields. As US interest rates rose, these speculative positions lost significant value. While some experts note that market volatility does not automatically equate to lower future pensions, the crisis has triggered intense political pressure and legal challenges from affiliates seeking compensation for damages.
