Chilean politicians debate emergency income amid rising unemployment
Chilean politicians are debating economic relief measures following reports from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) that the unemployment rate reached 9.6% for the June-August quarter, affecting approximately 990,000 people.
Lautaro Carmona, leader of the Communist Party, has proposed reinstating an Emergency Family Income (IFE) specifically for the unemployed. Carmona argued that the measure is necessary to mitigate the impact of the labor crisis on families, noting that most unemployed citizens lack access to credit. He described the proposal as an “investment in people.”
In response to these proposals, Interior Undersecretary Máximo Pavez stated that the government is currently prioritizing the “Despega Chile” plan and the Reconstruction Law. While Pavez did not explicitly rule out future aid, he emphasized that the administration is focused on existing measures, such as subsidies for training and hiring, rather than new direct transfer programs like the IFE.
