Argentine deputies seek to summon Chilean ambassador over Malvinas route

A group of Argentine deputies from the Unión por la Patria party, led by former Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero, has submitted a resolution to summon the Chilean Ambassador to Argentina, Gonzalo Uriarte Herrera, before Congress.

The request seeks clarification on a new commercial maritime and air connection between Punta Arenas, Chile, and the Malvinas Islands. Legislators are specifically questioning whether this route, planned for November by the Chilean company Easter Island Naviera using the vessel Danstar, will be used to supply hydrocarbon exploration or exploitation projects in disputed waters.

The deputies aim to determine the official position of the Chilean government regarding this operation and its compatibility with historical diplomatic commitments and bilateral agreements made within MERCOSUR regarding Argentine sovereignty over the islands. They also seek to clarify the level of involvement or authorization provided by Chilean authorities in these new logistics operations.
