Chilean science funding faces debate over new Fondecyt rules

Debate has emerged regarding new regulations for the Fondecyt Postdoctoral competition in Chile, specifically concerning residency requirements and funding prioritization.

The Ministry of Science has introduced a requirement for permanent residency to apply for the 2026 Fondecyt Postdoctoral contest. Critics argue this could hinder scientific development, noting that international researchers in fields like astronomy provide essential knowledge transfer and global networks for Chilean scientists.

Additionally, the new rules allow the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID) to direct up to 70% of awards toward priority areas. While this has raised concerns about the impact on arts, social sciences, and humanities, the regulations guarantee that at least 30% of awards will be reserved for non-priority projects. Proponents suggest that disciplines like the social sciences can still contribute to priority challenges such as artificial intelligence, climate change, and public policy.
