Chilean Senate advances housing regularization law
The Chilean Senate's Housing and Urbanism Commission has approved a proposal to update the “Ley del Mono” (Law 20.898). This legislation aims to provide a simplified procedure for regularizing self-built homes and property expansions that were constructed without municipal permits or final reception.
Legislators noted that the previous version of the law expired in 2016. Recent factors, including the use of AFP pension fund withdrawals during the pandemic to improve or expand residences, have increased the need for updated regulations. The initiative seeks to allow more citizens to formalize their property documentation through a more agile administrative process.
