Chilean housing regularization legislative update

Overview

The Chilean Senate’s Housing and Urbanism Commission has approved a proposal to update the “Ley del Mono” (Law 20.898). This legislation intends to establish a simplified and more agile administrative procedure for regularizing self-built homes and property expansions that were constructed without municipal permits or final reception.

Legislators indicated that the previous version of the law expired in 2016. The need for updated regulations has been driven by recent factors, such as citizens using AFP pension fund withdrawals during the pandemic to improve or expand their residences.
