Chilean vessel Danstar to resume trade route to Falkland Islands

Diplomatic tensions are rising between Chile and Argentina following the announcement of a new maritime commercial route between Punta Arenas and the Falkland Islands (Malvinas). The Chilean company Easter Island Naviera is preparing the merchant vessel Danstar to begin periodic shipments to the archipelago, a service that has been suspended since 2011.

The planned voyages, expected to occur between November and December, will traverse the Strait of Magellan and head into open waters toward Port Stanley. While Chile and the United Kingdom defend the initiative as private commerce, the move has triggered significant concern in Argentina regarding sovereignty claims.

The Argentine government is monitoring the situation closely. While officials have not yet filed a formal diplomatic protest to preserve bilateral relations, they are evaluating potential measures if the vessel is found to be transporting equipment or supplies related to oil exploration projects, such as the Sea Lion project, which Argentina considers illegal in the disputed zone.
