Chilean wildlife sightings confirm ecological corridor in Maipú

In Chile, the recent sighting of a puma and a colocolo cat in the Quebrada de La Plata Natural Monument near Maipú has confirmed the area's role as an active ecological corridor. These sightings, captured by trap cameras from the University of Chile, are significant as the colocolo cat had not been recorded in the area for over six years.

Wild felids play a critical role in the ecosystem; as apex predators, they help regulate herbivore populations and maintain ecological balance. However, these species face increasing threats from habitat fragmentation due to urban and industrial expansion, forest fires, climate change, and the presence of domestic or feral dogs that can spread disease and prey on native fauna.
