Mexico authorities warn of digital fraud during back-to-school season

Mexican authorities and cybersecurity experts are warning of an increase in digital fraud targeting families during the back-to-school season. The Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana (SSPC) has alerted the public to various cybercrime tactics, including the creation of fake sales websites, deceptive electronic equipment offers, and the impersonation of educational institutions to steal personal information or funds.

Cybercriminals often use social media, messaging apps, and sponsored ads to spread these scams, frequently using high-demand or limited-availability claims to pressure victims into making immediate deposits. Once payments are made, scammers typically block communication with the victims.

Security researcher David González from ESET noted that the significant economic flow during this period makes it a lucrative target. For the 2026-2027 school cycle, Concanaco-Servytur estimates an economic impact of 144,450 million pesos. To mitigate risks, the SSPC recommends verifying contact information, comparing prices to avoid unrealistic discounts, and using only official channels or recognized distributors for digital purchases.
