Cyber fraud escalation in Mexico

Overview

Cyber scams in Mexico have seen an increase in activity, with fraudsters targeting digital transactions such as streaming subscriptions, contests, and concert ticket pre-sales. These attackers frequently use phishing and smishing tactics, employing artificial urgency and official-looking logos to steal sensitive data or money.

Following these trends, the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) issued a specific alert regarding fraudulent websites and social media groups impersonating the agency to scam individuals seeking Mexican passports. The SRE has requested investigations from the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection and the Cyber Police.

More recently, the Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana (SSPC) has warned of a surge in digital fraud targeting families during the back-to-school season. Criminals utilize fake sales websites, deceptive offers for electronic equipment, and the impersonation of educational institutions. Security researcher David González from ESET noted that the high economic flow during this period makes it a lucrative target, with Concanaco-Servytur estimating an economic impact of 144,450 million pesos for the 2026-2027 school cycle.

Authorities are also highlighting the vulnerability of senior citizens to digital deception. Federal Deputy Emilio Suárez Licona reported that approximately 33 percent of older adults in the country have fallen victim to such scams, threatening pensions and savings. Data from CONDUSEF indicates that seven out of ten financial frauds are currently conducted through digital means.

In Mexico City, the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) Cyber Police have issued a new alert regarding fraudulent “hackers” who promise to recover social media accounts. These criminals use direct messages or advertisements to claim specialized knowledge, eventually demanding upfront payments, passwords, or verification codes to steal money or seize control of additional accounts.
