Chile's Easter Island Naviera plans monthly cargo service to the Falkland Islands

Chile's Easter Island Naviera (also known as Easter Island Line) is negotiating a regular monthly maritime route between Punta Arenas and Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands. The service would transport food, construction materials, spare parts, industrial supplies and other goods to the British overseas territory, while returning scrap metal and recyclable material to Chile to improve profitability. The initiative is backed by the Falkland Islands Development Corporation (FIDC) and has been discussed with Chilean and British chambers of commerce.

The route is also intended to support the Sea Lion offshore oil project, a major development in the South Atlantic led by Israel's Navitas Petroleum (65% stake) and Britain's Rockhopper Exploration (35%). The project, valued at up to US$2.1 billion, aims to produce up to 50,000 barrels per day from an estimated 170 million recoverable barrels, with first oil expected in early 2028. It could generate more than US$10 billion in gross value and provide the Falklands with a 9% royalty share.
