Chile's Los Lagos Network and Subantarctic Curriculum Boost Education for 30,000 Students

The Los Lagos regional education network, coordinated by SalmonChile, marked its second anniversary with more than 150 participants from companies, foundations, public schools and municipalities. The alliance now includes 76 organisations, whose actions reach over 30,000 student‑equivalents—about 17.4% of the regional enrolment—across 193 schools in 28 communes. Attendees highlighted a 1.9‑point drop in severe absenteeism where the network’s strategies are applied.

Separately, the University of Magallanes introduced a territorial‑focused teaching booklet titled “De sur a sur. Cuaderno didáctico: saberes y experiencias del maritorio subantártico”. Developed with funding from the National Cultural Heritage Fund, the material reflects the knowledge of remote communities such as Puerto Edén, Puerto Toro and Isla Lennox, and addresses topics like local crafts, indigenous navigation, invasive species and salmon farm impacts. The booklet will be first distributed to schools in the subantarctic area and made available digitally for broader use.
