Chile's Patio Vivo Program Adds Outdoor Learning Spaces for 800 Students

The Fundación Patio Vivo, together with the Fundación MC and the Servicio Local de Educación Pública (SLEP) of Llanquihue, inaugurated two new Patio Vivo Cultivables at the liceos Pedro Aguirre Cerda in Puerto Varas and Punta de Rieles in Los Muermos. The facilities include a greenhouse, outdoor garden plots, composting areas, grey‑water irrigation and spaces for classes held outside, aiming to integrate nature into the curriculum.

The projects will serve 802 students and provide training for 79 teachers to conduct sustainability‑focused lessons. Director of Innovation and Incidence Marcial Huneeus said the Los Lagos region has become a reference for the initiative, while SLEP executive director Claudia Trillo highlighted the public‑private partnership that now equips five of the seven technical‑professional schools in the province with such outdoor learning environments.
