Chile's prison authorities seize contraband in Arica raid as Chanco detention centre closure sparks political backlash
Gendarmería de Chile carried out a raid at the Arica Penitentiary under its 2026 Institutional Action Plan against prison violence. The operation, led by Regional Director Colonel Fabiola Torres Gutiérrez, uncovered mobile phones, handmade knives and illicit drugs. Torres said the raid “allowed the removal of illicit substances and prohibited items from circulation” and helps prevent risky activities inside prisons.
Separately, the Ministry of Justice and Gendarmería announced the closure of the Chanco Preventive Detention Center. Senators, deputy Daniel Bustos and mayor Marcelo Waddington voiced strong opposition, warning of job losses, community impact and the need for broader consultation. They called for a review of the decision and a dialogue with local stakeholders.
