Chile's SERNAC launches free consumer rights course and files compensation claims against power firms

The National Consumer Service (SERNAC) in Chile has opened a free online course titled “Consumo Informado: Derechos de las Personas Consumidoras.” The four‑module program, running from 27 July to 30 October 2026, covers topics such as informed citizenship, misleading advertising, e‑commerce safety, legal guarantees, and non‑discrimination. Regional Director Angélica Solar said the diploma will help consumers stay ahead on their rights.

In parallel, SERNAC has launched six Voluntary Collective Procedures against the electricity companies CGE, Chilquinta, Luzparral, Luz Linares, Compañía Eléctrica del Litoral and Energía de Casablanca. The actions follow a severe weather front that caused widespread power outages across the country. Acting National Director Carolina González noted that the utilities have indicated willingness to compensate consumers and that SERNAC will formalise these offers under the Consumer Protection Law.
