Overview

In early July 2026 Chile faced an intense heat wave followed by a severe frontal system that brought heavy rain, strong winds and flooding to central and southern regions. The storm damaged power infrastructure, left more than 170,000 customers without electricity and caused at least ten deaths. The municipality of Illapel also requested an administrative investigation into CGE, with the mayor demanding fines, compensation and stronger contingency planning. Energy Minister Ximena Rincón endorsed these actions, stressing compliance and resilience.

That same day the National Consumer Service (SERNAC) launched a free online consumer‑rights course and initiated six voluntary collective procedures against CGE, Chilquinta, Luzparral, Luz Linares, Compañía Eléctrica del Litoral and Energía de Casablanca, seeking compensation for the outage impacts. The combined regulatory and consumer responses underscore growing scrutiny of Chile’s electricity system and the need to address systemic vulnerabilities exposed by extreme weather events.
