Chile's SHOA rules out tsunami threat from Philippines quake

Chile’s Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOA) used its National Tsunami Warning System to assess the 7.8‑8.2 magnitude earthquake that struck southern Mindanao, Philippines, on June 8, 2026. After modeling and analysis, SHOA concluded that the seismic event does not meet the criteria needed to generate a tsunami that could affect Chile’s coastline and announced, “the characteristics of the quake do not meet the conditions necessary to generate a tsunami on Chile's coasts.”

The agency said it will continue permanent monitoring of the quake, while local Philippine authorities reported no fatalities but noted damage to a police building in Alabel, Sarangani province. The statement aimed to reassure Chilean coastal communities that no tsunami risk exists from this distant seismic event.
