Chile's SMEs confront challenges as Seguros SURA provides insurance and training

Data from the Chilean Central Bank in May 2025 show that the country has about 759,320 active small and medium‑size enterprises (SMEs) and roughly two million micro‑entrepreneurs, representing 98.3% of the national business fabric. Together they generate 64% of formal employment and contribute around 12% of total economic activity. The sector is highlighted each year on 27 June, the UN‑designated World SME Day.

Seguros SURA is positioning itself as a strategic partner for these businesses. Executive Gustavo Espósito says the insurer’s goal is to strengthen SMEs’ ability to manage risks and grow. The company offers a range of products, including complementary health insurance for employees and coverage that protects business assets. It also backs several development programmes: the “Prefiero el Maule” entrepreneurship school – run with the Universidad Católica del Maule – provides free, in‑person and online training for regional entrepreneurs; a partnership with Propyme delivers ongoing advisory support; and participation in the Corporación Grande Pyme helps generate research and policy proposals for the sector.

Through these initiatives Seguros SURA aims to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of Chile’s SMEs, recognising their critical role in the national economy.
