Chile's Tarapacá Free Zone set for extension beyond 2030

Senator Renzo Trisotti met with Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz, presidential delegate Adriana Tapia and ZOFRI board chair Claudio Pommiez in Santiago to launch a high‑level work table on the future of the Tarapacá Free Zone (ZOFRI). The group aims to redesign the zone’s model, add value‑added services and create industrial parks that will support the region’s dominant mining sector.

The participants emphasized the need to keep ZOFRI competitive past its current 2030 deadline and to tap projected mining investments of more than USD 50 billion over the next five years. Government officials said technical teams are already preparing concrete timelines and commitments to modernise the zone and turn it into a logistics hub for northern Chile’s copper corridor.

The initiative is presented as a strategic response to the region’s economic reliance on mining, seeking to diversify activities, boost employment and secure the zone’s role in trade, tourism and industry for future generations.
