Chile's Teatro La María and Las Improperias bring new stage works home and abroad

The theatre company Teatro La María staged a two‑part cycle at Santiago’s Centro Cultural Matucana 100 in August. The first piece, “Fe de ratas,” ran from 6‑16 August and satirised corruption and abuse within the Catholic Church and Chilean society. The second work, “La nueva obra,” was presented from 20‑30 August and used a meta‑theatrical premise of robbing a bank to fund productions, highlighting the precarious conditions of Chilean artists. Both productions were directed by Alexis Moreno and financed by the National Fund for the Development of Scenic Arts.

Meanwhile, the improvisational troupe Las Improperias from Concepción was invited to perform at the third International Improvisation Festival “Si Supremo” in Maldonado, Uruguay, scheduled for 10‑13 September. The all‑female collective, led by Fernanda Marín, will showcase works such as “El Psiquiátrico Rosado,” following earlier pieces that blend comedy, social critique, and audience participation.

Both initiatives underscore a vibrant Chilean theatre scene that is expanding its reach domestically and into regional festivals.
