South American theatre revival
Overview
In late July 2026 the region’s theatrical scene featured high‑profile revivals. Chilean veteran Claudia di Girolamo returned after 33 years to stage the monologue “El vicio absurdo,” a reinterpretation of Virginia Woolf’s mind, directed by Rodrigo Pérez. In Buenos Aires, Claudia Piñeiro’s contemporary drama “Verona” reopened at the Ítaca Complejo Teatral under Cristina Osses, exploring family ageing.
Chile’s Teatro La María presented a two‑part cycle at Santiago’s Centro Cultural Matucana 100. “Fe de ratas” (6‑16 August) satirised corruption and Church abuse, while “La nueva obra” (20‑30 August) used a bank‑robbery premise to dramatise artists’ funding precarity; both were directed by Alexis Moreno and backed by the National Fund for the Development of Scenic Arts. The all‑female improvisational troupe Las Improperias from Concepción was invited to Uruguay’s International Improvisation Festival “Si Supremo” in Maldonado (10‑13 September), showcasing pieces such as “El Psiquiátrico Rosado.”
The 19th Festival Internacional de Teatro y Danza (FINTDAZ) ran 4‑18 August across Iquique, Pica and Camiña, opening with “El Amor” by Casanga Zúñiga Teatro, supported by national cultural funds and a partnership with Cerro Colorado | BHP. Meanwhile, the Maipú‑based Teatro Pequeño Clan, slated for performances in Quito and Tarragona, warned that insufficient travel funding threatens its international tour.
In August, Argentina’s Grupo de Teatro de Cáritas 9 de Julio launched its 37th “Agosto a Todo Teatro” season at Teatro Rossini (8 August‑5 September), with proceeds aiding local institutions. Chilean comedian‑improviser Natalia Valdebenito debuted “El Tesoro” at Teatro ICTUS (27‑29 August), creating each show live from audience‑chosen titles.
