Indonesia food prices surge as chili and rice costs rise
Indonesia is experiencing significant volatility in food commodity prices, particularly regarding chili and rice. Data from the National Food Strategic Price Information Center (PIHPS) and the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) indicate sharp increases in various chili varieties. Red bird's eye chili prices have reached highs of approximately Rp114,000 per kilogram, while curly red chili prices have also seen substantial fluctuations.
Rice prices are also trending upward, with many regions reporting costs above the government-set maximum retail price (HET). In several districts, medium and premium rice prices have exceeded the established thresholds.
Local governments are responding to these price surges with various interventions. In Pekanbaru, officials are proposing transportation subsidies to the National Food Agency (Bapanas) to reduce distribution costs. In Serang, the local government plans to conduct market operations to stabilize the supply of essential goods. Meanwhile, BPS officials have warned that continued price hikes in chili could pose a significant risk to annual inflation rates if not controlled by the end of the year.
