China accelerates transition from Microsoft Windows to domestic Linux

The Chinese Ministry of State Security has directed state-affiliated entities to accelerate the removal of Microsoft Windows from government desktop computers. This directive moves the retirement timeline for the specialized Windows 10 China Government Edition forward to 2026, significantly earlier than the original 2027 target.

The Windows 10 China Government Edition was a bespoke operating system developed by C&M Information Technologies, a joint venture between Microsoft and the state-owned China Electronics Technology Group Corporation. The system was designed to meet strict security standards through localized activation and Chinese cryptographic support.

To replace Microsoft software, agencies are transitioning to domestic operating systems based on Linux. Companies such as Kylin Software and Tongxin Software Technology, which develop alternatives like Uniontech OS, have seen positive market reactions. However, the transition faces technical challenges, including the need for application testing, driver validation, and staff retraining to ensure compatibility with the new open-source-based systems.
