China urges US to repeal drone tariffs citing supply chain risks

China has called on the United States to immediately repeal new tariffs on drones and their components, labeling the move as protectionism disguised as national security concerns. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated that the measures, implemented under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, unfairly target Chinese products and threaten the stability of global industrial supply chains.

Under the proclamation signed by President Donald Trump, the U.S. is imposing a 100% tariff on unmanned aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight exceeding 25kg and those equipped with thermal-imaging technology. Smaller drones without these specific capabilities, along with various components, are subject to a 25% tariff. The White House stated these actions aim to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and strengthen domestic production.

Beijing argues that Chinese drone exports to the U.S. are primarily for civilian use, including agriculture, infrastructure inspection, and film production. Chinese officials also rejected U.S. allegations regarding a “shadow transshipment network,” calling such claims a false narrative intended to suppress Chinese industry. The new tariffs are expected to take effect on September 3.
