Most measures officially took effect on September 3, though duties on certain non-sensitive components are scheduled to begin on February 9 of the following year.

In response, China has accused the United States of “unilateralism and protectionism applied under the pretext of national security.” Beijing argues the measures “overgeneralize the concept of national security” and will “disrupt the global drone supply chain.” Chinese officials have rejected U.S. allegations regarding a “shadow transshipment network,” labeling them a false narrative to suppress Chinese industry. The policy significantly impacts major players like DJI, which has been on a U.S. blacklist since 2022 and controls over two-thirds of the global market.

Critics and public safety officials have warned that the sudden increase in costs could negatively impact law enforcement, search-and-rescue operations, and wildfire monitoring. To complement these tariffs, the U.S. is adopting a “whole-of-government” approach, including easing export controls on certain civilian drones to help domestic manufacturers compete.
