China advances armored capabilities with Type 99B drills and Type 100 development
China has demonstrated the combat capabilities of its Type 99B main battle tank through live-fire drills conducted by the People’s Liberation Army’s 80th Group Army in Shandong. The exercises involved maneuvering and engaging targets at distances of up to 1,200 meters, both while stationary and in motion. Experts note that the Type 99B represents a significant upgrade over the Type 99A, particularly regarding its integration into wider information networks.
Parallel developments involve the Type 100 tank, which features a distinct design layout. Unlike the Type 99 family, the Type 100 utilizes an unmanned turret, placing the three-person crew in a protected hull capsule. This configuration reduces the vehicle's weight to an estimated 35–45 tonnes, significantly lighter than the approximately 55-tonne Type 99A. This weight reduction offers greater strategic mobility for transport and bridge crossings. The Type 100 is being produced by the Inner Mongolia First Machinery Group in Baotou.
