China armored warfare technology and deployment
Overview
China is advancing its armored warfare capabilities through the development of new tank models and the integration of existing hardware into networked combat systems.
In Shandong, the People’s Liberation Army’s 80th Group Army conducted live-fire drills with the Type 99B main battle tank, demonstrating its ability to engage targets at distances up to 1,200 meters. The Type 99B is noted for its improved integration into information networks compared to the Type 99A. Concurrently, development is underway for the Type 100 tank, which features an unmanned turret and a lighter weight of approximately 35–45 tonnes to enhance strategic mobility.
Expanding on these technological shifts, the People's Liberation Army deployed Type 99A tanks during the Center-2026 strategic military exercises in Russia. During these exercises, the tanks were utilized as part of a networked combat system, operating in coordination with drones, unmanned vehicles, and reconnaissance systems to emphasize sensor-driven battlefield connectivity.
