China advances fusion technology amid renewable energy curtailment

China is making significant strides in energy technology, both in the field of nuclear fusion and renewable energy management. In the pursuit of controlled thermonuclear reaction, China has completed a record-breaking 582-ton magnet designed for fusion research. This development is viewed as a potential breakthrough in maintaining plasma within a magnetic field, a critical challenge for achieving stable fusion energy.

Simultaneously, China is facing challenges with its renewable energy infrastructure. Reports from Global Energy Monitor (GEM) and the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) indicate that the country experienced significant curtailment of renewable energy in the first half of 2026. While official figures suggest lower rates, estimates indicate that combined solar and wind curtailment reached approximately 360 terawatt-hours (TWh), a 49% year-on-year increase. This amount of wasted energy is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of Mexico, driven by grid capacity limitations and imbalances between supply and demand.
