China-Africa trade deficit widens to $80 billion

The trade deficit between Africa and China has widened significantly during the first eight months of 2026. According to Chinese customs data, bilateral trade reached $273.94 billion between January 1 and August 31, 2026.

During this period, Chinese exports to the African continent totaled $177 billion, while imports from Africa to China amounted to $96.93 billion. This resulted in a trade imbalance of $80.07 billion. While African exports are growing, they have not been sufficient to offset the rapid increase in imports of Chinese manufactured goods.

This trade dynamic follows recent policy shifts, including China's decision on May 1, 2026, to apply zero tariffs to 53 African countries with which it maintains diplomatic relations, excluding Eswatini.
