China AI and semiconductor stocks plunge as STAR50 index drops 40%

The Chinese technology sector is undergoing a severe market correction, characterized by a significant decline in artificial intelligence and semiconductor stocks. The STAR50 index, which tracks leading high-tech companies on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, has fallen approximately 40% from its July peak, erasing an estimated $480 billion in market capitalization.

This downturn has also impacted broader markets, with the CSI300 index declining more than 20% since its June peak. The correction has hit various sub-sectors, including robotics, data center components, and chip manufacturing. Notable companies affected include humanoid robotics firm Unitree, which saw its value nearly halved, and semiconductor designers MetaX and Moore Threads, which experienced significant retreats following massive gains last year.

Analysts attribute the crash to several converging factors: extremely high valuations—with the STAR50 trading at roughly 100 times earnings compared to the Nasdaq 100’s 30 times—concerns over actual revenue generation versus computing capacity, and potential U.S. trade restrictions on semiconductor exports and data center equipment. The volatility also reflects investor uncertainty regarding whether the massive investments in AI will yield sufficient profits to justify current market prices.
