Chinese stock market and AI sector decline

Overview

The Chinese stock market has experienced a significant loss in value, with approximately $3.5 trillion evaporated since a peak in May. This downturn has pushed the CSI 300 index into bear market territory, following a drop of over 20% from recent highs. Investor pessimism is linked to slowing economic growth, weak domestic consumption, and eroding corporate profits in sectors such as banking, electric vehicle manufacturing, and AI development. While state-backed funds, known as the ‘national team’, injected $6.8 billion into the market to curb the decline, analysts suggest these interventions may be insufficient to restore long-term confidence without broader economic stimulus.

Within the technology sector, the decline has been particularly acute. The STAR50 index, tracking major technology stocks, fell 40% from its July peak, resulting in a $480 billion loss in market capitalization. This correction follows a period of rapid growth driven by expectations of AI advancement. Analysts attribute the decline to high valuations, uncertainty regarding actual revenue generation from AI infrastructure, and persistent U.S. trade restrictions on semiconductor technology, including potential bans on Chinese equipment in global data centers.

Specific losses have been noted in the semiconductor and AI industries. Unitree, a humanoid robotics company, saw its stock value halved since its August IPO. Semiconductor manufacturers MetaX and Moore Threads have seen market values drop by approximately 50% since July, while memory chip maker CXMT lost over a quarter of its capitalization in a single month. Additionally, optical component suppliers Zhongji Innolight and Eoptolink have fallen about 60% from their recent peaks. Despite the crash, the STAR50 trades at approximately 100 times earnings, significantly higher than the Nasdaq 100’s 30 times.
