During the Eagles of Civilisation 2026 military exercises in Egypt, Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force J-16 fighters conducted medium- and close-range combat training against Egyptian Dassault Rafale fighters. This event marks the first time these two specific aircraft types have engaged in organized combat training, and it represents the first deployment of the J-16 outside of Asia.

To facilitate the drills, China executed a complex logistical operation, with J-16 fighters traveling approximately 6,000 kilometers to reach Egypt, supported by YY-20A transport aircraft and aerial refueling. The exercises have drawn significant attention from Western defense circles and NATO, as the drills provide an opportunity to observe the capabilities and electronic signatures of the Chinese heavyweight fighter against a Western-aligned platform.

In response to these developments, French Chief of the Armed Forces General Staff, General Fabien Mandon, arrived in Cairo on August 24. Leading a senior military delegation, Mandon met with Egypt’s Defence Minister Lt Gen Ashraf Salem Zaher and Chief of Staff Lt Gen Ahmed Khalifa to discuss deepening military cooperation and strategic partnerships.
