China-Egypt joint military air exercises
Overview
China and Egypt have commenced the second edition of their joint air force exercise, ‘Eagles of Civilization 2026’. The drills, scheduled from mid-August through early September at various Egyptian air bases, involve a significant deployment of Chinese Shenyang J-16 multirole strike fighters. This marks the first time the J-16 model has been deployed to the African continent, supported by YY-20A aerial refueling tankers, KJ-500 airborne early warning aircraft, Y-20A transport planes, and Z-20 helicopters. The exercises focus on enhancing operational coordination, air combat tactics, air superiority, and combat search and rescue. Recent developments show the maneuvers include direct air-to-air combat simulations between Chinese J-16 pilots and Egyptian pilots flying French-made Dassault Rafale jets. Additionally, the exercises are providing a combat test for Egypt’s Russian-designed MiG-29M and MiG-29M2 fighters. While Egypt operates these modernized ‘4+ generation’ variants with upgraded avionics and phased array radar, the J-16 is noted for possessing significant technological advantages, including a radar approximately three times larger and superior weapons-carrying capacity. A notable milestone occurred during the drills when a Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force YY-20 tanker successfully performed aerial refueling of an Egyptian Air Force Dassault Rafale, marking the first documented instance of a Chinese tanker transferring fuel to a Western-built fighter jet. While social media and Chinese military blogs have circulated unverified claims of a ‘7-1 victory’ for Chinese J-16 fighters over Egyptian Rafales in simulated engagements, no official data from Cairo or Beijing has confirmed these results. Analysts suggest these unverified scorelines may be part of information campaigns to promote Chinese aircraft in export markets. Following the drills, General Fabien Mandon, France’s Chief of the Armed Forces Staff, arrived in Cairo on August 24 leading a high-level military delegation to discuss deepening military cooperation.
