Taiwan condemns China-Indonesia naval drills planned for waters east of island
China and Indonesia have announced plans to conduct a joint naval navigation exercise in the waters east of Taiwan in mid-August. The Chinese Ministry of Defense stated that the exercise, involving the Chinese vessel Honghe and an Indonesian Navy frigate, will focus on communication drills and maritime replenishment to enhance bilateral operational capabilities and maintain regional stability.
Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council has strongly condemned the planned operation, labeling it a 'military provocation' and 'political manipulation.' Taipei argues that Beijing is attempting to create a false impression of jurisdiction over the waters east of the island. The council described the move as 'exercises in name, expansion in fact,' asserting that it undermines the regional status quo and threatens national sovereignty.
The announcement comes as Taiwan is conducting its own annual Han Kuang military exercises. While China maintains that the drills are intended to deepen pragmatic cooperation with Indonesia, the unusual nature of a joint exercise with a foreign military near Taiwan has drawn significant attention from international observers.
