Chinese military activity near Taiwan

Overview

China has engaged in a series of military activities near Taiwan, drawing condemnation from Taipei. In late July, the People’s Liberation Army conducted two days of live-fire drills in the Taiwan Strait near Dongshan Island. These exercises included navigation warnings that prohibited vessel entry in specific maritime zones. The drills occurred following diplomatic discussions between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

In mid-August, China and Indonesia conducted joint naval exercises in the Pacific Ocean and Philippine Sea, east of Taiwan. The drills involved the Chinese vessel Honghe and the Indonesian frigate KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai, focusing on maritime communications, formation maneuvering, and at-sea replenishment. Indonesia's Navy described the activity as routine maritime diplomacy and a standard international protocol conducted during the warship's return voyage from Russia.

Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council and Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the exercise as “military provocation,” “political manipulation,” and “wilful and irresponsible behaviour.” Taipei officials argued the drill was intended to create a false impression of Chinese jurisdiction over the area and to escalate regional tensions. Taiwan has sought clarification from involved parties, specifically requesting further details from Jakarta.

These naval activities coincided with Taiwan’s annual Han Kuang military exercises, which included anti-blockade drills and defensive land preparations. Meanwhile, the United States State Department has urged Beijing to cease military pressure on Taiwan and called for peaceful resolutions to cross-Strait issues.
