China approves first commercial brain implant for tetraplegia

China has approved the first commercial brain implant for individuals with tetraplegia. The device, a small implant called NEO, was developed by the medical technology company Neuracle Technology in collaboration with researchers from Tsinghua University in Beijing.

The technology utilizes a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) to register electrical activity from the motor cortex. Using artificial intelligence algorithms, the device interprets brain signals and converts them into instructions for computers or robotic devices.

In a documented case, a man named Dong Hui, who had been paralyzed from the neck down for six years, used the implant and a robotic glove to regain some motor control. After 11 months of rehabilitation, he was able to use the device to hold a pen and write. The system aims to facilitate "bridging neural repair," a method that synchronizes descending brain signals with incoming sensory signals to encourage the nervous system to reorganize itself.
