Overview

China is expanding the use of brain-computer interfaces (BCI) from laboratory settings to clinical and industrial applications, particularly in Shanghai. This transition is supported by the government’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), which designates the sector as a priority.

In Shanghai’s Minhang district, the Brain Intelligence Valley has emerged as a national hub hosting over 50 companies. Building on previous approvals, Neuracle Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. has developed an invasive BCI medical device designed to compensate for hand motor functions using electrodes implanted between the skull and the dura mater. To support widespread adoption, health insurance authorities are currently working on product coding to facilitate patient coverage.

Further clinical advancements are being led by MingShi Brain Computer Technology, which is conducting studies on vision reconstruction for blind patients. By using surgically implanted electrodes to stimulate the visual cortex, the system has demonstrated the ability to provide partial visual recovery. This research targets a significant global need, addressing the needs of approximately 9 million blind individuals in China and over 43 million worldwide.
