China automotive market faces domestic slump amid rising exports

China's automotive market faced significant pressure in July, with retail passenger car sales dropping 20.9% year-on-year to 1.46 million units. This decline is attributed to weak domestic demand, unfavorable seasonality, and rising oil prices, which have increased the cost of operating internal combustion engine vehicles. Consequently, new energy vehicles (NEVs), including electric and hybrid models, now represent 65.1% of total sales in China.

Despite domestic weakness, Chinese vehicle exports are surging. Chinese electric vehicle exports grew 120% in the first half of the year, driven by high fuel costs globally. While the United States maintains high tariffs to protect local manufacturers, Chinese brands are expanding their presence in the European Union and the United Kingdom, where their market share rose to 12.1% in June.

In Brazil, experts predict that intense competition from Chinese manufacturers will continue to drive down vehicle prices. This trend is fueled by China's massive production scale and excess capacity, as companies seek to export to international markets to maintain viability amidst domestic competition.
