China CO2 emissions fall amid Strait of Hormuz maritime disruptions

China's CO2 emissions decreased by 1% during the second quarter of the year, according to a report by the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). This decline is attributed to a drastic drop in crude oil import demand caused by maritime traffic disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz resulting from the conflict between the United States and Iran.

Estimates based on Chinese government data indicate that oil consumption fell by 9% across the overall economy and by 16% in the transport sector. Analysts suggest that China is navigating these energy supply challenges through its ongoing strategy of electrification and the rapid deployment of renewable energy sources.
