Iran plans maritime exclusion zone amid Persian Gulf naval clashes
Tensions in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman have escalated following a series of maritime attacks and military retaliations. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that commercial vessels were targeted by gunfire in the northern Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Iran claimed to have targeted approximately 20 vessels attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz, designating the area as forbidden and unsafe.
In response to recent missile attacks against a U.S. Navy vessel, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the destruction of five Iranian oil tankers. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard subsequently reported attacking two American vessels and eight oil tankers in retaliation for U.S. strikes on Iranian tankers.
Amidst this maritime conflict, Iran is planning to establish a new maritime exclusion zone near the Strait of Hormuz. Mohsen Rezaee, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, announced the plan, which would involve new shipping corridors and restricted access areas within the Persian Gulf. While the specific coordinates and enforcement procedures have not been released, the move increases the operational risk for international shipping in the region.
