China-Taiwan maritime pressure escalation

Overview

In August 2026, the Taiwan Coast Guard reported that four Chinese Coast Guard vessels entered restricted waters near Kinmen. Taiwan authorities responded by deploying patrol boats to conduct one-on-one monitoring and used broadcasts to drive the ships away. This activity followed the end of a seasonal fishing moratorium in China, which led to a surge of fishing vessels. Taiwan officials accused Beijing of using ‘gray zone’ tactics to challenge maritime sovereignty.

By September 2026, the China Coast Guard expanded its maritime pressure tactics. In addition to increased activity within the Taiwan Strait, the agency established a second front of operations along Taiwan’s Pacific coast.
